It’s that time of year again. Changing seasons, cooler temperatures, and close quarters can lead to coughing co-workers with germs aimed straight at you. Don’t be the next victim! Prepare for this year’s cold weather by giving your immune system the boost you need to stay healthy this winter…and all year long.

Your shield for good health

Consisting of cells, tissues and organs, your immune system acts like a shield to thwart harmful pathogens from attacking your body. To cause trouble, these infectious agents must cross the lining of your skin or mucous membranes of your digestive, respiratory, urinary or reproductive tracts in order to wreak havoc.

I tell my patients to stop them dead in their tracks with these five immune-boosting secrets:

1. Eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. Weight control, a healthy diet and regular exercise can keep you in shape to combat whatever comes your way.

2. Protect and nourish your skin, your first line of defense. In addition to frequently washing your hands, maintain your skin’s proper pH by supplying it with collagen, chondroitin, and amino acids.

3. Listen to your gut. Scientific studies show that over 50% of your immune system is in your intestines. There is increasing evidence that probiotics and acidophilus can help boost your immunity by building good bacteria.
